The athletics events for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be held at the Stade de France from 2 to 10 August.
OLYMPIC HISTORY
It was only logical that athletics should feature on the programme of all the modern Games, starting with the first Olympiad in Athens in 1896. The fact that it has existed for centuries has given athletics the status of "king sport" of the Olympic Summer Games, and contributed to its popularity. The men's programme has been virtually unchanged since the 1932 Games in Los Angeles, with only the 20km walk added at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. Women have been competing in athletics since 1928. Until 1992, the women's programme comprised just 17 events, but since the addition of the 3,000m steeplechase to the women's programme in 2008, it is now almost on a par with the men's programme.
At the last Olympic Games, held in Tokyo in 2021 (after a year's postponement caused by the pandemic), Kevin Mayer was the only Frenchman to reach the podium, with a silver medal in the Decathlon.
IN BRIEF
With 48 events, 43 of which will take place at the Stade de France, athletics is the individual sport with the most events and participants at the Games due to the number and diversity of the competitions - from sprinting and middle-distance to jumping, throwing and combined events.
The track programme includes men's and women's sprinting, middle-distance and long-distance competitions, as well as hurdles, steeplechases and relays. These events will all take place on the Olympic stadium track, which is 400 metres long and made up of two straights and two semicircles.
The Olympic programme includes two combined events: one for women (Heptathlon with seven disciplines) and one for men (Decathlon with ten disciplines). These events are scheduled over a period of two days in a challenging sequence for the athletes, culminating in the crowning of the overall winners.
The competitions will take place next to the Olympic stadium track. They will be held in a jumping area (high jump and pole vault), a sand pit (long jump and triple jump), a throwing circle (shot put, discus and hammer throw) and on a javelin runway. The athletes each compete in turn and the competitions include a qualification phase during which the best athletes qualify for the final.

All athletics finals will take place in the evening.
