About the French squad

The French national squad represents the country in all international football matches under the aegis of the French Football Federation or FFF. The symbol of the French team is the Gallic rooster in the colours of the French national flag: blue, white and red. Traditionally the players of the French national squad are known as ‘the Blues’.

The team was formed in 1904 and played its first match against Belgium on the 1st May the same year, which ended in a draw. The first ever French striker at the time was Louis Mesnier who raised the game of the national squad, which was captained by Fernand Canelle. From that time onwards, numerous generations of talented footballers left their mark on the French squad. We shall quote, amongst others, Raymond Kopa, Michel Platini and Zinédine Zidane. The matches played by the French squad at the Stade de France witnessed some defeats as well as victories, which was a good omen. The French national football squad was the first in Europe to win all the international competitions, including the World Cup in 1998, the Olympic Games in 1984, the Confederations Cup in 2001 and the Continental Championships in 1984 and 2000. Nowadays, the Blues include the most coveted players from international clubs, including Paul Pogba, Dimitri Payet and Antoine Griezmann.
